Sie ist seit 1998 zusammen mit den Einrichtungen in Reggio nell’Emilia eine bedeutende Forschungsuniversität mit Forschungsaufträgen von über 300 Unternehmen aus der Region Emilia-Romagna. Die Gründung erfolgte 1175. Die Universität übernimmt in Zusammenarbeit mit der Accademia Militare di Modena auch Teile der Ausbildung von Offizieranwärtern.
